Survivor Stories
Storytelling and sharing our experiences are essential to healing. Bystanders who have not personally experienced our type of loss often have a difficult time relating and often distance and disconnect which adds another level of trauma for survivors. This page encapsulates the stories of over 20 homicide participants expressing their personal experiences as a way to educate the public and relatives about the type of support that is helpful and needed as we navigate grief and trauma.
Please take the time to witness these real-life stories. This is not only a useful tool to learn about how different survivors grieve in their unique ways, but a way to validate their experiences and become a more sensitive, inclusive society. If you have ideas about how you would like to see these videos integrated into public education, social education, or to educate the media, please contact us.
“If the BC Victims of Homicide support program had existed in Vancouver during the early stages of my grief, it would have alleviated so much stress, confusion, and heartache. I often wished there was a place I could recommend to others walking this painful path — a source of guidance, comfort, and connection. Through sharing my personal journey and gathering supportive resources, this website hopes to offer survivors a sense of understanding, healing, and hope.”
~ Christopher Ducharme, Past President of the British Columbia Bereavement Helpline and Founder of BC Victims of Homicide
